Andrzej Sapkowski was born in Lodz, Poland in 1948 to a family of academics. Before he started writing full-time, he completed an economics degree and held a senior sales representative position. Sapkowski started writing short stories that got published in a number of journals and anthologies. This marked the beginning of his writing career.
